Researching managed accounts

As a mutual fund investor, you have access to a wealth of free information — rankings, reviews, SEC filings, and regular reports to the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA) — to help you compare fund performance and fees.

It's not as easy to evaluate managed accounts, which are not required to report their performance to FINRA. That's one of the reasons many investors making this selection work with an adviser.

Financial advisers pay for access to databases of composite performance figures from hundreds of investment managers. But as an individual investor, you'll need to request performance information from each investment manager. Recent information is often available on the investment company's Web site.
