Investing in a managed account

If you already have a strong working relationship with a financial adviser, you may ask him or her to recommend appropriate managed accounts. If not, you may want to search for an adviser with whom you can establish that type of relationship.

Using a less customary approach, you can research investment management companies and individual managers to find those with strong reputations and diverse offerings. When you find ones that interest you, the investment management company will steer you to a financial adviser, who may be one of its employees.

You can also begin the process of opening a managed account online at certain investment managers' Web sites. This approach resembles buying mutual funds directly from the issuer.
