Choosing a financial adviser

Once you've decided what type of adviser best suits your financial needs, you'll want to make a list of people with the right qualifications for the job. Here are some ways to get started:
1. Ask your family, friends, colleagues, or employer if they would recommend the adviser they're working with.
2. Consult your accountant or attorney. Someone you already have a good working relationship with may be qualified to provide financial advice or can refer you to people who are.
3. Go to seminars, classes, professional meetings, and community events on managing your financial affairs.
4. Contact brokerage firms or banks to ask for recommendations. Be sure you make your requirements clear so that you're directed to advisers with the qualifications you're looking for.
You can telephone each of the people on your preliminary list, explaining that you're looking for a financial adviser. The tone of the conversation and the information you're given can help you decide whether to schedule an interview.
